Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, you have a question?
Alexander Shenkar: Oh, I have a question! Hare Krishna! So you’re saying the process of Krishna consciousness is vey easy: we just have to follow the principles and put Krishna in the center. Recently in the United States they made same-sex marriage legal. So, if you have two men or two women and they want to get married – they are both devotees and they’re celibate – and they put Krishna in the center, can they have a Krishna conscious marriage? Would you give your blessings for it?
Bhakti Charu Swami: Well, I don’t really understand the American culture very much. I come from a simple, innocent Indian background. But my simple understanding is this: why to get married?
putrarthe kriyate bharya
The Laws of Manu
The Vedic understanding is in order to procreate one should get married. One should accept the service for procreation. Can two men or two women give birth to a child? (audience in the background “No!”) Then there is no question of marriage.
Alexander Shenkar: But not every devotee who gets married has a child!?
Bhakti Charu Swami: [Interrupts] Anyway – let’s not get into that! This is something which flies above me. I’m sorry. I can’t really answer that question. I gave you what is my simple understanding.
