From the spiritual perspective, another explanation for homosexuality or bisexuality lies in reincarnation.

Those who are not properly integrated in one life can find themselves in the next life with a male consciousness in a female body or vice versa. Such souls are stuck. The situation is not completely their doing because everyone has participated in creating the environment and culture that have allowed such circumstances to develop. In many cases if a person has demonstrated excessive masculine or feminine energy in one life or strong hatred for one sex or the other, these patterns will persist in the next life, even in the body of the opposite gender. This can encourage a homosexual lifestyle.

Remember this whole world is just a training ground or a school. A soul in a previous life may have been in a strong athletic 200 pound male weightlifter’s body, now the soul is reborn into a weaker women’s body. As a man perhaps this individual was extremely chauvinistic, insensitive and unwilling to develop his nurturing side. He must now take on a female identity in order to develop these aspects but his strong connection to his previous life means that he still expresses the powerful masculine energy so that now the person is lesbian in a state of bewilderment. This soul may have to reincarnate in the next life as a woman once again in order to integrate the denied feminine aspects.

As another example in previous life someone in a female body may have experienced extreme abuse. Now that same individual is born once again in a female body, this time filled with great self hatred and dislike of being female. In an effort to deny her hated femininity she creates an imbalance in her sexual orientation.

If we feel attraction towards members of our own sex, we are not alone. Great numbers of people have similar karmic factors to work out. There is nothing wrong with having affection for someone of the same gender. However, the difficulties arise when this affection seeks sexual expression. Sex life means that the partners are ready to care for one’s produced from their union. What naturally results from a sexual relationship is the birth of a child. Any other use of sexuality is unnatural and entails negative consequences.

    First, permit me to say, that I personally have only been in the Presents of Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja on a couple of brief occasions, when he was a young sanyasi, but over the years I have had the acquaintance of souls that love him . And may I say, my respect for him is Deep.
    Secondly; In the book, The Complete Yoga of Human Emotional-Sexual Live, we find two paragraphs related to the subject;
    In the case of most individuals, the “Oedipally” determined pattern for allowing release of sexual tension ( or conducting of life-energy) is such that it is not socially acceptable ( from the conventional ” point of view” ). In other words, in order to relieve themselves sexually, most individuals are patterned to do something that is ( from the conventional, social” point of view”) unusual or unconventional. And that patterning is always in conflict with the individual’s social ego. Therefore, everyone ( pervious to the awakening of most fundamental ” self”- understanding) is caught in one or another form of intense emotional-sexual double-bind—-and this “causes” people ( in general ) to be disturbed in their emotional- sexual lives.
    Some individuals ( who are, to one or another degree, homosexual in their orientation) relieve themselves of some of the stress of this double- bind by openly admitting their homosexuality ( and, thus, ” coming out of the closet”). Such open confession is, of course, appropriate. However, those who do not regard themselves as exclusively ( or, otherwise, at all) homosexual in their orientation should be aware that they, also, must ” come out of the closet” relative to their emotional-sexual patterning, whatever it may be. There are many varieties of heterosexual and bisexual patterning — and it is just as necessary for individuals to be confessed relative to such patterning as it is for homosexuals to be openly confessed about their patterning.

    That was what I always thought. Homosexuality being the results of some unfinished karma.

    Sounds very speculative to me. People take all kinds of births for all kinds of reasons. Not everything is karma…desire or ‘kama’ also plays an important role. Just as someone may desire to take birth as a heterosexual male or heterosexual female, so also one may desire to take birth as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc. Just because it is not your personal desire does not make it bad karma. This material world is constructed so that the living entities may fulfill all their various desires, and it is also an exact reflection of the spiritual world:

    “One should know for certain that nothing can exist in this cosmic manifestation that has no real counterpart in the spiritual field. All material manifestations are emanations of the Transcendence. The erotic principles of amorous love reflected in mixed material values are perverted reflections of the reality of spirit, but one cannot understand the reality unless one is sufficiently educated in the spiritual science.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta 1.4.29, purport)

      That’s a very good point about being born in a particular body type may not necessarily be the result of karmic reactions, but it could also be due to Krishna facilitating a person’s desire to enjoy in a particular way.

      I think Bhakti Tirtha interpreted the topic from the perspective of the material world being like a classroom, and that all of our material circumstances are like a curriculum for acquiring realizations. So he tried to answer the question of why there are varieties of people in terms of unfulfilled lessons that need to be learned, which may carry a slight negative connotation.

      But it could also be the case that a person intentionally choose to experience pleasures in the body type of their preference. Different strokes for different folks. Can you imagine all the various heavenly planets out there? Oh my… I call it Krishna’s perfect arrangement.
